So for any of the people who may be interested in this blog because of my prolactinoma, I guess I should talk about it a little. The pituitary gland is a little pea sized glad at the base of your brain and it is often referred to as the "Master glad". Although is is in you skull, right behind your eyes. It isn't really classified as a part of the "brain" but as an endocrine gland. Endocrine glads secrete hormones that are chemical messengers that keep our body in balance.
My pituitary glad has a little hitchhiker (8mm) tumor that is pushing on the cells that produce prolactin. Prolactin is a pregnancy hormone that is released during pregnancy and it allows the mother to breast feed. It also stops you from menstruating and it can make it difficult to loose weight. You need that fat for the bebe. A normal range for prolactin
is 4-30 ng/ml. When I was first diagnosed mine was 70 something, then it went up to 80 something then it would go up and down but relatively staying within the same range. The highest it went was 110 ng/ml. Although, mine is pretty high I still feel fortunate as I have heard that some people's levels go up into the high hundreds and even thousands.
Once I was diagnosed the team of doctors decided that since my levels weren't too too high and I wasn't experiencing any side effects that we would wait and watch. So every six months I go to the neurologist and endocrinologist and get everything checked out. Only once a year I get an MRI though. So every time I get my brain scanned the tumor wouldn't change and we would continue to wait.
I strongly believe that I am going to be tumor free someday. I am going to get an MRI and they won't find anything. When this is going to happen I am not sure...it just will when the time is right.
My biggest fear during this whole process was that I would have to take medication as I read all the blogs and posts where people suffered due to medication side effects. During my last visit in January my fear came true.. the doctor passed me a prescription and told me to start taking the pills asap. I thought that I had my mind made up and drugs were out but I didn't say anything to the doctors and I took the prescription.
Now anyone that knows me knows that I like to be well informed so I did research. Yes, I did the google search but I scoured the medical journals and real scientific data. What I found was that the drug that I was prescribed could potentially cause a long list of side effects included but not limited to nausea, othrostatic hypo tension (a favorite in pharm class), dizziness, blah blah blah and heart valve problems! I read the heart valve problems and was freaked out! I continued my research and trying to remain objective.
Once I had all the information I made a pros and cons list. If I take the drug there is a slight correlation with valve damage or I can have my hormones out of wack and get heart disease, osteoporosis, weight gain, be infertile as well as all the emotional aspects that come with hormones.
So I bit the bullet and I have been on the drug for two months. I have no side effects! Although the first few weeks I had a dry mouth like no ones business and the bowels were a little slow. After a month I became a real woman again! After 3 years of not having periods!! I think I am loosing my gut, which I could NEVER loose. Bye bye baby hormones see you again when I need you!
So when I get back to mainland I am getting my hormone levels tested and I feel that they will be in the normal range. I am also getting a MRI to see if the hitchhiker is shrinking. I think he/she is. So I guess that is enough babble for now. If you have any questions message or e-mail me angemacisaac@hotmail.com and I'll get back to you.
Overall, I feel blessed because if I was going to get a brain tumor I by far got the best kind! Here is a great video that gives a quick overview of pituitary tumors.
I love this video haha
Three years ago I was diagnosed with a prolactinoma (tumour on my pitutary gland). Since that time my view on health and wellbeing has drastically changed. I hope to share my discoveries, journey and struggles with anyone who might be interested.

The Cove
Today I just finished watching a documentary called "The Cove" and I was shocked just as I sure you will be. Did you ever think about where that cute little dolphin came from at Sea World or the countless kissing dolphins at Caribbean resorts? Well this documentary reveals the shocking truth! Thousands of dolphins are trapped, sold and those not sold are slaughtered for their flesh and are sold as "whale meat". I really recommend that you educate yourself on this topic by watching this documentary and no longer support Sea World, or tourist attractions that showcase dolphins or any other marine animals. Here is a PSA about this issue.
This issue is not just important for the dolphins but for the countless people that are eating this toxic meat every day. Mercury is a poison to the nervous system and it can cause brain damage as well as other serious health issues.

Fresh Pits and breath
The business of smelling good is big bucks. Over the past few years I have tried a range of natural deodorants including: Tom's, salt stone, home made concoction I bought at White Lotus and Dr. Mist! Tom and I didn't get along so well so we had to stop hanging out, the homemade deodorant I bought from the white Lotus was great, it smelled like Terry's Chocolate Oranges! Mmmmmm The last time I went to buy some the White Lotus was sold out so I bought Dr. Mist and I fell in love!
Dr. Mist is a Canadian product that was featured on Dragon's Den. It is an all natural product (no nasty aluminum) that keeps you smelling fresh and it doesn't stain clothes. I know when I used conventional deodorant I would always have caked on deodorant on the insides of my shirts. So at White Lotus Dr. Mist retails for $11.99. I have been using it everyday for the past month and it feels like there is enough in the bottle to last me until I get back to the mainland.
http://www.drmist.ca/
Fresh breath! Did you ever wonder why there is a warning label on tooth paste saying "do not swallow"? It may have something to do with the fact that it is a chemical party. I was kind of hesitant in buying natural toothpaste because it is so expensive and I would read the ingredients of the natural brands and they would still have some chemicals (waste of money). I eventually found a brand that is chemical free. Desert Essence. I'm not going to lie there was a transition period..for the first week the stuff sickened me. Now, I don't mind it at all. I would describe the taste as a flower pooping in your mouth. Here is a link of the product. I purchased it at the Superstore and it was on sale for approximately $7.00. Quite a bit more expensive then the regular toothpaste but it is a big tube and I would rather pay more then put industrial grade cleaner in my mouth.
Here is a video reviewing Dr. Mist and another tooth paste Dr. Ken's. The video gives a great overview on why these natural products are beneficial and like I always say I just love videos.
Enjoy!

I LOVE Kris Carr!
Just wanted the world to know that I love Kris Carr! Kris is a woman that inspires me to live a healthy life and take care of my "bod pod". She is funny, humbling and one smart cookie! I have ordered her book "Crazy Sexy Diet" and DVD "Crazy Sexy Cancer" and patiently awaiting their arrival (I will blog on both when I read/watch). Side note: I also ordered "The China Study", "Thrive diet", "The MS diet" and "Adopting a Racing Greyhound" haha I am going to get a greyhound someday! Excited!
So take a few minutes, put your feet up and watch these quick clips of Kris! Ohh she has a blog http://crazysexylife.com/ and has also developed an on-line community (which I am proud to say I am a member of) http://my.crazysexylife.com/.

Bloom & Flower
Spring is a time of growth and change, the flowers bloom and the birds begin to sing. Meanwhile, most people just cross their fingers and close their eyes waiting for the first sign of summer. This spring I am embracing the change that comes with the season and I am doing some personal growth myself. I have finally fully committed with the Vegan lifestyle, it took me awhile to get to this point but the universe kept sending me signs that I could no longer ignore (I'm a true believer of the secret).
#1) a couple of weeks ago I turned the TV on and there was a program on about diet and health and the gentleman Dr. Neil Barnard was speaking about the health benefits of a animal free diet (vegan). Dr. Barnard is also author of the book "21 day weightlosss Kickstart".
#3) I checked my e-mail after my friends left and I had an invitation to the 21 day vegan challenge headed by Dr. Barnard. If this isn't a sign that I was looking for, I don't know what would be. So what is the 21 day Vegan challenge you ask? Well is pure genius if you ask me. You sign up and everyday you get an e-mail with a 21 day vegan meal plan, recipes included, a celebrity message of encouragement (e.g Brendan Blazier, Kris, Carr, Alicia Sliverstone etc.), helpful videos and an on-line community of support! So I signed up and the rest is history! On a side note if I can eat vegan living in Port Aux Basques, NL then I no longer have excuses.
So this spring I encourage you to bloom and grow. Find that something that you were always wanting to do or try and just live in alignment with your hopes and wishes. The best of luck to you all.

#2) Last week a couple of my friends came to visit me in Port Aux Basques. During their visit I ate foods that I haven't ate in months! Lots of cheese, white pasta, mini eggs by the hundreds (I'm serious!), ice cream, cookies, gravy and I'm sad to say even some chicken. Well it didn't take long for my body to refute the fact that I trashed it. After the first day of eating these foods I became gassy, then I became fatigued. I felt really tired and had to take a nap! I hardly ever nap. After my friends left I suffered..I had a headache for three days, my face broke out with acne, I was exhausted but couldn't sleep well and I felt chilled. It took me 5 days of eating a vegan diet filled with fresh veggies and fruit before I had my usual energy levels back and 5 days until I could sleep a whole night without waking up every few hours.

The Supercharged Hormone Diet: Book Release
This past week the second Hormone Diet book "The Supercharged Hormone Diet" was released! Author and Canadian Nautropathic doctor Dr. Natasha Turner is an expert in hormone balance. I own the first Hormone Diet book and despite the title it is more of a life style change then a quick fix to loose weight. Dr. Turner teaches us that if our hormones are not in balance you cannot loose those unwanted pounds so the books focus is on identifying unbalanced hormones and what you can do to achieve balance. In January I was fortunate to meet Dr. Turner :D I even asked her about my prolactinoma and she suggested chaste berry, which is a natural why to help decrease excess prolactin. I didn't use the chaste berry at that time but I now have the knowledge to use it in the future if suitable.
I am really excited to read this book, and if you are interested and what more information check out the Hormone Diet website there is great information and even a health blog with healthy recipes.

Vega
So back in January I went to the Health Expo. While I was there I was introduced to the product Vega and ever since I have been hooked! Vega is a Vegan line of products that was developed by Canadian vegan athlete Brendan Braizer author of the book "Thrive Diet". I heard Brendan speak at an Environmental conference a couple years ago and he spoke of his book the thrive diet and how one's diet directly impacts the environment.
Initally I was intrigued by the product that I have been using the "Whole food Health Optimizer" as it has a claim on the package that it can help balance hormones (how fitting)! Here is some of the description from Vega website

You can purchase Vega products at Superstore/Dominion or health food stores. The Health Optimizer that I buy is a months supply is $60.00. If you try it or have any questions please contact me or leave a comment. Thanks :) Here is a quick video clip talking about some Vega products.

Back in Action
So it has been a couple of months since I have posted anything and to be honest I wasn't planning on coming back to the world of blog. I felt that my blog didn't really have a specific topic. I'm a little all over the board, but I realized that is just how I am in life so it makes sense that my blog would follow suit.
So an update on the Vegan lifestyle. I tried the Vegan eating for 3 weeks and I found it pretty good. I wasn't eating meat for awhile so that part wasn't hard but the cheese! I craved cheese so bad! I know you can get cheese substitutes and I tried a few but it was my downfall. Also, I learned that I wasn't quite ready to fully take on the vegan lifestyle because I didn't like the attention. I found it difficult in social situations to say I was eating aVegan diet, because it would turn into a huge explanation and then me watching people eat cheese. Lastly, I felt like a Vegan poser. I read some of the book Vegan Freak and well to be frank the book freaked me out. The authors were very adamant that you were vegan 100% or not at all. So overall I am pretty much eating a vegan diet as I don't eat eggs, milk, yogurt, try and avoid cheese and I avoid meat products. Occasionally, I eat honey and if I am offered bake goods with dairy products in it I eat it. So overall it is an evolving process and I will continue to adapt my diet to meet my lifestyle and beliefs. I plan on trying the vegan diet when I get back to Halifax as in Port Aux Basques the natural/healthy food selection is slim pickings. Either way I'll be sure to keep you all updated. :)

Electromagnetic Fields
Every living being has its own electromagnetic field that surrounds it, an invisible layer of energy. In today's world we are surrounded my electromagnetic fields from various electronics (light bulbs, computers, TVs, cell phones etc. Some research reveals that radio or cell phone masts are linked to higher rates of cancer in the area after being erected (as cited in Gerson, 2007). Other health issues may include " sleep disturbances, headaches, skin rashes, heart palpitations, and vertigo" (as cited in Gerson, 2007).
Robert Becker MD claims that electromagnetic fields "the greatest polluting element in the earth's environment" .
Some advise from Charlotte Gerson regarding cell phone use is:
1) cut cell phone use to a minimum
2) Switch off after use (I never turn my phone off...I even use it as an alarm clock). I also feel this principle kind of defeats the purpose of a cell phone because no one would be able to get a hold of you. That being said if you feel that you could live with this by all means turn your cell off.
3)Never carry on the body even when turned off
4)Hands free devices should be used if possible to hold device away from the body
I guess the point you should take from this would not be to freak out and swear off your cell phone, but use your common sense. Do you need to talk on your cell phone every waking moment about trivial things? People, you wouldn't believe what I hear people talking about on their cell phones while riding on the bus.
Here is a video clip of a documentary that looks interesting.

Music
Music makes us feel emotion, connection with other individuals and acts as a mode of expression. Since music can affect emotion, we can use it when we are feeling low or tired. Every morning when I wake up I immediately turn on up beat music, this way no matter the weather, or how tired I feel.. I'm dancing around the kitchen before I know it.
Music is also important because it an help us when feeling stressed, it can push us harder during a workout and its a workout for your brain!
An interesting neuroscience fact is the more you like a particular song the more your body moves! So crank on a song the you love, get moving and let those endorphins flow! This is good for your health, healing and starting your day in a positive way!
Here is a great song to get you feeling good and I hope you have a great day!
If you're a geek like me you may like the next video clip that discusses the history and neuroscience behind music.

Post Punk Kitchen
This is a great web-site http://www.theppk.com/ with vegan recipes and a way for vegans to network with other vegans. If you're not vegan, or you want to test out this lifestyle like me, you should check out the site and try some of the fun recipes.
Here is one of the recipes that I tried last night for supper and I really recommend trying it. It contains vital wheat gluten which is a natural protein that comes from the endosperm of the wheat berry. This makes the cutlets very filling and satisfying. As well one of the biggest concerns your friends and family will have once you stop eating meat is that you won't get enough protein but despite common belief there are ALOT of plant based alternatives.
Chickpea Cutlets
1 16 oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup vital wheat gluten
1 cup plain breadcrumbs
1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
Olive oil for pan frying
Optional ingredients:
4 cloves garlic, pressed or grated with a Microplane grater
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
In a mixing bowl, mash the chickpeas together with the oil until no whole chickpeas are left. Use an avocado masher or a strong fork. Alternately, you can pulse the chickpeas in a food processor. We’re not making hummus here, so be careful not to puree them, just get them mashed up. You can also sneak the garlic cloves in here instead of grating them, just pulse them up before adding the chickpeas. If using a food processor, transfer to a mixing bowl when done.
Add the remaining ingredients and knead together for about 3 minutes, until strings of gluten have formed. The strings should look like this (click photo for an even closer up view):
Preheat a large heavy-bottomed skillet over low-medium heat. Cast iron works best. If you have two pans and want to cook all the cutlets at once then go for it, otherwise you’ll be making them in two batches.
Divide the cutlet dough into 2 equal pieces. Then divide each of those pieces into 4 separate pieces (so you’ll have 8 all together). To form cutlets, knead each piece in your hand for a few moments and then flatten and stretch each one into a roughly 6 by 4 inch rectangular cutlet shape. The easiest way to do this is to form a rectangle shape in your hands and then place the cutlets on a clean surface to flatten and stretch them.
Add a moderately thin layer of olive oil to the bottom of the pan. Place the cutlets in the pan and cook on each side for 6 to 7 minutes. Add more oil, if needed, when you flip the cutlets. They’re ready when lightly browned and firm to the touch. I’ve found that they cook more thoroughly if I cover the pan in between flips. I also use my spatula to press down on them while they’re cooking, that way they cook more evenly.
If you have any great recipes or foods that allow you to ensure you are consuming enough protein please send them this way :)

I'm not going to lie.. the picture on the web-site looks much yummier but this dish was just what I needed to satisfy my cravings of the "typical Canadian supper" of meat and potatoes. |

Vegan
The Vegan diet and lifestyle has come a long way over the past few years as it continues to become a mainstream way of living. So what exactly does vegan mean? Well vegans avoid all animal products such as meat, dairy, honey and using animal products such as found in some personal products and of course wearing animal skins.
If you want some reasons to become Vegan or to just learn more about this lifestyle check out my cousin Jenna's Blog Living A Vegan Life. Jenna covers all the vegan bases and shares some great recipes and pictures. Yeah Jenna! You have inspired me :)
http://livingaveganlife.blogspot.com/
Since August 2010, I have been eating a veg diet (the cool way to say vegetarian). Through being educated over the past four months via reading books, articles and Jenna's Vegan Blog. I now feel I am prepared to take my diet a step further for the well being of animals and for my health. I am pledging to eat a Vegan diet for a month officially starting tomorrow January 8, 2011.
The reasons I am going to eat a Vegan Diet: (no particular order)
1) Health benefits
2) Welfare of Animals
3) Conservation of water, land and resources
I have chosen one month in starting this lifestyle because I feel this is enough time to let me test the waters to determine if this lifestyle that is right for me. I feel that the biggest challenge for me will be when eating out or at friends/families, because I don't want to be an inconvenience or stress out the host. As well the Vegan lifestyle relies a lot on tofu, soy and tempeh, which doesn't work well with me since I have thyroid issues (I'll blog more about this). So if you have any tips on how to manage these issues please send your advise this way. Ooh and another difficult area may be cheese and chocolate, but I'm sure I ate enough this Christmas break to last a life time.
So follow me as I continue to try new foods, challenge my old ways of thinking and living a life that coinsides with my ethical beliefs.
Cheers,
To a New Year filled with love, health, happiness and growth!

Let There be Light!
Everyday/night we rely on electricity to help shed some light into our daily doings. I just wanted to share with you ..the magical salt lamp! For years I have seen these lamps in shops and quite frankly just walked right past them. I didn't even think that really looked that nice, I figured they were just a hunk of fake rock or something.
Within the past year I have read a few Naturopath books noting the healing powers of salt lamps and so I googled "salt lamp" and was surprised to find that indeed I have seen these healing lamps many times before. Have you ever met someone before and thought that they weren't that attractive and then once you got to know them and then suddenly they were now very attractive? Well this is how I feel about the salt lamp..once I learned about it, it's natural beauty shone through. So let me share the story of the salt lamp with you ...
History of Himalayan Salt Therapy
Millions of years ago, continents collided raising ocean beds high into the mountains of the Himalayas. The salt from those beds still remains deep inside the mountains.
Many people swear by the Salt Crystal's healing ability, claiming relief from the common cold, the curing of skin problems, mental health disorders, respiratory illness, headaches, migraines and much more. These original salt lamps are the most exquisite and naturally pure lights now made. A heated salt crystal lamp will attract water molecules from the air, forming a NaCl and H20 solution. Sodium is a positive ion, and Chloride, a negative ion. Hydrogen has a two part negative charge and Oxygen is a positively charged ion. These ions create a reaction of two positive ions and three negative ions. After canceling each other out, one lone negative ion is produced. This negative ion seeks out the first positive ion like a dust, or bacteria particle and zaps it. This is the process of positive ion reduction and is how our Himalayan Salt Lamps work.
How does your Himalayan Natural Salt Lamp Actually Emit Negative Ions?
The emission of ions is caused by the alternating actions of the crystal rock salt's ability to absorb water, and then evaporate into the air.
Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamps have a similar effect to an ionizer. These lamps emit negative Ions to their surroundings. Negative Ions kill bacteria, purify the air, reduce radiation, increase well being & soothe the mind, body & soul. Negative Ions are found naturally in nature, before Thunder Storms, at Waterfalls and wherever Nature is most pure.
Direct Health Benefits Received From Himalayan Salt CrystalsHelps with Fatigue, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Allergies, Sinus, Migraines, Bronchial, Cold, ADHD, Burns, Allergies, Sinus, Catarrh Eczema and Emphysema.

Here is another web-site that explains how salt lamps work:
http://www.ionicsalts.com/science.htm
I am all about finding scientific research to back up my findings and unfortunately I have been yet to find something that I feel proves how these lamps work. I did come across a post that refutes these lamps as a hoax and people who use the lamps reply saying the benefits that they have experienced since using the lamps: http://www.lisabarger.com/is-it-a-scam/salt-lamps.html
So for those of you who require hard evidence to believe any claims these lamps may not be what you're looking for.
As for me I have purchased a salt candle holder and I will eventually get a lamp. I love it! The light that shines through the holder is so warm and calming and when I use it..it gets damp (which supports what the science claims).
If you are interested in trying them out I recommend the candle holder because they are relatively cheap, I bought mine for $6.99. When using candles be sure to use soy candles with no lead to avoid toxic chemicals and perfumes.
If you have one of these lamps or know someone that does I would love to hear about your experience using them.
Thanks for reading :D

Even kitties love salt lamps! (This is not my pic but it looks like Chico so I thought that I would use it- it was taken from http://www.himalayansalt.com/salt/labels/salt%20lamps.html) |
