How it all began!

This blog began as I was inspired by my cousin Jenna who had recently developed her own blog titled “Living a Vegan Life”. In talking with Jenna I realized a blog would allow me to share my adventures in navigating the complex chemical soup that we all live in!

A year and a half ago at the ripe age of 23 I developed my own hormone issues. My prolactin (pregnancy hormone) was higher than a pregnant woman and I wasn’t even pregnant!! Yikes! It turned out that I had a prolactinoma, a tiny beguine tumor on my pituitary gland. Additionally, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism several years prior. So what could possibly caused all this hormone chaos at such a young age? genetics? the environment? stress?

In conducting my own research on the matter I stumbled upon the book “Sexy Hormones” by Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe. This book empowered me as it opened my eyes to the outrageous amount of chemicals that are added to our foods, personal products and environment. More interestingly I learned how these chemicals influence our hormones and health! I must be clear that I am not stating that these products caused my hormones to become out of balance but I do feel that in reducing our exposure to harmful chemicals that our health can only improve.

So I expect that most of you do not have hormone concerns, unless you are all middle aged women experiencing menopause. However, the information I hope to share is beneficial for anyone’s health, the environment and will hopefully help you develop awareness around this hidden issue. As well I am hoping that I can not only provide some information, but learn from others and any information they may have.
